IN DEVELOPMENT - BLACK BOX THEATER
Do you know what a Black box theater or “black box” theater is?
It is a performance space with a square or rectangular shape, high ceilings, black walls and ceiling and a flat floor, that allows the use in a variety of stage and audience layout configurations. It is a versatile and multipurpose space.
Thinking about the educational use of this space, one of the options is teaching drama, which seeks participation, stimulation, social interaction, in addition to cultural growth and the students' oral and body language. This type of activity can be part of all stages of teaching and curriculum subjects.
In addition, child drama and theater practice bring several advantages: working on posture and body presentation, bringing self-confidence to speak in public, improving memory, reinforcing interest in literature, stimulates group work. There is a strong stimulus to the use of creative skills. Rather than just prioritizing logical reasoning, acting classes help children to be more creative, inventive, and eventually to have more developed lateral thinking.
The Black box theater can also be used for speech training, aiming at sharing knowledge through simple and didactic presentations, also teaching children to behave like an audience.
In addition to the pedagogical advantages described above, looking at the financial side, the Black box is a less expensive and faster option to build when compared to a traditional theater.
SUM has been working on the project for a Black box theater for the International School of Curitiba, inserted in the school's sports complex.
With a superior insulation design and acoustic treatment and new circulation flows, the Black box will accommodate a wide range of theatrical and performance productions. Besides this, it offers several layouts for use as a classroom and serves as well for art exhibitions, conferences and events, being built in a few months and with less financial support.
